We have traveled over 100K miles around the world to bring our readers travel information and recommendations. Previously in Texas, we highlighted Houston, a fun city with great food and many places of history to visit. So many people from Texas had raved about the Texas Hill Country that our interest was piqued. We set out to visit there and see what it was like. We chose a bed and breakfast on the outskirts of Fredericksburg called Rose Hill Retreat (RHR).

If you want a quiet, peaceful, and restorative place to stay this is the perfect B n B. It is owned and run by a couple who pay close attention to detail and have a great staff that makes your stay very comfortable and enjoyable.

Rose Hill Retreat seems like a magical place where the world stops for a moment. Everything about RHR relaxes you and fills your soul with warmth and comfort. The historic mansion is on a sprawling 58 acres. The main house sits atop a hill. The long driveway and open lavender fields will make you think of JR’s ranch. It is a private resort with 18 rooms for guests. Your choice of rooms includes staying at the main house or four other cottages on site. There are dozens of wineries close by and the fun historic town of Fredericksburg.

We stayed at the Carriage House which is directly behind the main house. The Carriage House has a large bedroom with a separate sitting area including a candle fireplace, fridge, and coffee maker. It’s a short walk to the main house where breakfast is served. You can make your own coffee in your room or go to the main house, grab a cup of delicious java, and sit on their spectacular front porch with an expansive view of the hills.

The main house has two dining areas, a library, a bar area with complimentary snacks/beverages, and a sitting room with a great view of the Hill Country. The spectacular front porch is appointed with comfortable chairs for guests to watch the sunsets or to have their coffee in the morning. Sitting with a cup of coffee and viewing the Texas Hill Country from the porch at the main house offers another form of relaxation as you plan your day.

There are many venues in the area to visit from quaint shops in Fredericksburg to the smallest town in Texas, Luckenbach. Luckenbach even has song by Waylon Jennings dedicated to its many musical country events. Both are fun and interesting places to see.

 

Rose Hill Retreat serves awesome breakfasts to start your day before you explore the heart of Hill Country.. They are delicious, freshly made when you sit down, with a different breakfast every day, along with juice and coffee. These breakfasts can easily hold you over till dinner. In addition, there are some great restaurants in the area you might want to check out.

Two adjoining dining rooms in the Main house are quaint and exude serenity and comfort, both have excellent views.

There are a myriad of fun things to do near Rose Hill. Fredericksburg is probably one of the biggest attractions with dozens of fun stores to shop. Looking for cowboy gear, the ultimate kitchen accessory, restaurants, and the best homemade ice cream. There is even a store strictly dedicated to men. We enjoyed fantastic burgers at Burger Burger on Main Street. and a great lunch at Hill and Vine restaurant.

On the road into Fredericksburg, you will see Wild Seed Farm, one of the largest wildflower growers, offering expansive wild flower gardens. You will also notice the Texas State Troopers Museum. Of great interest to many is the National Museum of the Pacific War, located in downtown Fredericksburg. The Lyndon B Johnson National Historical Park is a short ride and worth visiting. As you return to RHR, you will notice a chocolate factory and shop called El Rey, also a place worth visiting. Chocolates El Rey sells are professional-grade chocolate and they offer a tasting room.

There are dozens of wineries. Perhaps the most interesting is the Rhinory which not only serves delicious wine, but you can also meet Blake, a 12-year-old rhino! His keeper can fill you in on all of Blake’s traits and what is planned for this Rhino retreat.
You must visit the town of Lukenbach, population three. The town is now privately owned and continues to be known as a fantastic venue for country music. The town has old country stores and other interesting places.

 

The wildflowers in Texas are endless. The most famous is the Blue Bonnet which wasn’t in season when we were there.
The Hill Top Cafe is a vintage landmark outside of Fredricksburg. It is full of nostalgia.
