Area officials want to reduce car lanes and increase bike lanes. They think that will help with gridlock.

Sarasota wants to reduce the car lanes and increase the bike lanes on some roads with the hope that gridlock will be reduced by more people riding bikes? Can you see the bike lane here?

"Sea levels have risen locally by an estimated 6.6 inches since 1946, according to the St. Petersburg tide station. An assessment by the Tampa Bay Climate Science Advisory Panel determined that “the Tampa Bay region may experience SLR somewhere between 6 inches to 2.5 feet by 2050 and potentially between 1 to 7 feet by 21001 .” Some expected effects of that SLR include inundation of low-lying areas, shoreline and beach erosion, reduced effectiveness of coastal stormwater drainage systems, and increased flooding during storm events."

Benderson changes it's mind and plans on putting  six to seven stories high, 600 rental/or condo housing units, a 150-room hotel and 140,000 square feet of commercial space  at 41 and Stickney into a hotel and retail, whew, what a mess that would be. It's one of the busiest intersections in Sarasota that leads to Siesta Key. Traffic already backs up with the draw bridge halting traffic and tourists flocking to Siesta Key.

    sarasota news events

Looks like the state is clamping down on slow drivers on Interstate 75 with a $121 minimum fine. We wonder if they will enforce it on Tamiami Trail? Excessively slow drivers add to the gridlock problem especially when they tie up all 3 lanes.

The University Blvd 'diamond traffic exchange was begun in July. It is hoped it will reduce traffic congestion in this area. It is the first such use in Florida.

The first attempt to legalize medical marijuana for those suffering from debilitating medical conditions was started by Florida State Senator Jeff Clemens, who introduced The Cathy Jordan Medical Cannabis Act. If passed, it would have allowed Floridians to privately possess up to four ounces of marijuana and grow up to eight marijuana plants. A poll conducted in the beginning of 2013 on behalf of People United for Medical Marijuana showed that 70 percent of Florida voters supported a plan to amend the state constitution in favor of marijuana legalization. Almost a year later, this percentage has increased to over 82% of Florida voters.

According to Visit Sarasota County (VSC), Sarasota County had 740,300 visitors in fiscal year 2013, spending $640,974,200 in the area economy. That is a 5.8% jump in visitors from fiscal year 2012 and a 10.2% increase in direct spending.

Our visitors are up, our business is up. Things are looking good, said Cheryl Gaddie, president of the Siesta Key Village Association. What a difference from three years ago.

The 2013 fiscal year ended June 30. Data from the Sarasota County Tax Collector also paints a positive picture for the area tourism industry.

With three months of revenue left to be calculated for 2013, Sarasota County has already raised $12,179,818 in revenue from the Tourist Development Tax eclipsing the total revenue reported for 2011. This comes after multiple years of increased revenues from the tax. Development Tax revenue grew by 16% in 2011, and by 17.5% in 2012.
