2018 NEST Calendar featuring Sarasota County students’ artwork now available
Sarasota County’s 2018 NEST Calendar is now available at county facilities, while supplies last. Each year, the Neighborhood Environmental Stewardship Team (NEST) produces the calendar, which supports the county’s goal of environmental stewardship.
Land acquired for Legacy Trail extension
On Dec. 20, The Trust for Public Land and Sarasota County announced the purchase of 2.7 miles of former railroad right of way to extend the popular Legacy Trail toward downtown Sarasota. The railroad corridor was acquired by Sarasota County from The Trust for Public Land, which had purchased the corridor last week from CSX Transportation and Seminole Gulf Railway.
Barefoot on the Beach returns to Nokomis with new name, time and themes in 2018
Formerly the Barefoot Beach Bazaar, Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources has revamped the event and moved it to a new time. In 2018, the event, which is now called Barefoot on the Beach, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the second Saturday of January through March at Nokomis Beach Plaza.
Library creative stations offer students chance to keep learning, exploring over winter break
Students can keep learning and exploring at Sarasota County Public Libraries’ Creation Stations during winter break. With tools for rapid prototyping, multimedia production, group collaboration and skill development for all ages, the Creation Stations, which are located at Selby Public Library in Sarasota and Shannon Staub Library in North Port, allow for hands-on experiences with tools such as 3D printing, sewing and robotics.
House District 72 Special Election ballots for Feb. 13 election scheduled for mailing
Vote-by-mail ballots for the Feb. 13, 2018, House District 72 Special Election will soon be mailed to voters who have requests on file with the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Office.
Sarasota County awards Sustainable Energy Economic District incentive to local company
The Sarasota County Commission recently approved a Sustainable Energy Economic District (SEED) incentive for a local clean technology company. Sarasota County was one of only two jurisdictions to be selected to participate in the SEED incentive program, which was created by the Florida Legislature.
Take a film trek to Machu Picchu during special screening of ‘Wild Orchid Man’
Sarasota County Extension Master Gardeners will host a special screening of “Wild Orchid Man: Journey to Machu Picchu” on Jan. 3.
