Our America Cross Country Tour
New York

A Park Ranger leads a group of students to tour Teddy Roosevelt's home. Virtually every student on Long Island gets to tour his home and see the dozens of bear rugs and animals that decorate the home. On our tour there were people from Germany, Florida and Virginia along with some Long Islanders on their 8th trip there.

We visited Sagamore Hill, on Long Island, the home of our hero Theodore Roosevelt, the Rough Rider. Sometimes called a Renaissance man, he was a Governor, President, statesman, writer, conservationist, and a visionary. The Victorian home was built in 1885 at a cost of $17,000 for the house and $30,000 for the 83 acres. A $13,000 great room was built later.

We found the magic cure for our water shortage in Sarasota County:) It's called reservoirs, you know, they hold water for later use. These we found on Long Island.

We headed to the north shore of Long Island and took in the waterfront by the Stony Brook Yacht Club.

Azaleas are in full bloom in New York as we tour the state.

A trip from Sarasota wouldn't be complete without a turkey sub from Geier's (a Sarasota establishment for over 25 years.)

We salute the 10,000 volunteer Firemen on Long Island. It would be nice if Sarasota and Bradenton had Volunteer Firemen instead of paid firemen. It adds to the camaraderie and pride of a community.

Teddy's estate is on 83 acres on Oyster Bay of the north shore of Long Island. Pictured above is a Copper Beach  tree with a narly trunk. The leaves on top are a bright red but the under leaf is green.

Teddy Roosevelt had an office in downtown Oyster Bay. Built in the Queen Ann Style like his home, it is now a restaurant.

An institution on Long Island is All American, a hamburger joint from the 1960's. It has been voted one of the top hamburger joints in the country by various magazines and AOL.

We dine on authentic Chinese food with our experienced teacher, Alice on the right. Alice was born in China but has lived in the states for over 35 years. The Fortune Wheel where we ate is world famous for their Dim Sum that they serve on the weekends. They are located in Levittown, NY.
