Our Turds of the Month go to this couple that creates havoc at SK beach by mass feeding the seagulls and causing mayhem.

We blanked out this man's face to protect his identity. We just hope he gets some weight loss attention soon before his heart gives out.

Sarasota Bradenton area named most popular retirement area by Portfolio.com. They say 27% of our population is over 65 and retirees typically move to areas that have a higher retirement population. 95% of our seniors moved here from another state. By last count 1.4 million Americans over 65 moved to a new area. Prescott, Arizona was ranked the 2nd most popular retirement area. The photo of Siesta Key Beach above answers any questions why people move here.

Meet Sean the OurTown Sarasota Man of the Month, November 2010. He is the most helpful, knowledgeable, nicest man we have found at a hardware store . We gave him a free full service car wash as recognition. He can be found at the DG Hardware store Clark and Swift. They are not an advertiser of ours. Maybe you could tell them they should be:)

Maybe when Sarasota replaces its water meter reading trucks they could get something that was more efficient? The county does have a fleet of hybrid cars.

Imagine you own a unit at the Colony Resort and the town of Longboat Key tells you, 'you can't use it' until some code issues are resolved. Thus the units may remain empty this year? photo prweb

Wife says she watches as a Sarasota firefighter punches her 69 year old husband.  The incident reportedly happened in Fort Myers Beach where they live. Hitting someone over 65 in Florida is a crime. The man was held without bond. Shown above is Sarasota Fire Chief Ken Ellerbe who we haven't heard from. You read about this in every other publication except for the ones in Sarasota. Weather turns chilly.

Sarasota County puts these handicapped devices at area beaches so those in need can go for a swim. We wonder what happens if the devices flip over?

A few hundred people line up for the 7K race starting at Phillippi Shores Elementary early Saturday morning, organized by the Manasota Track Club with funds going to Phillippi Shores. A shorter race was held for children.

Sarasota County says they didn't know about this gaping hole in the road that ate thousands of cars for over a week. It is located on Gateway Avenue by Gulf Gate Drive. A dentist told us the pot hole caused her to buy 4 new tires and have other work done on her car. One of the tires it just blew out.

The old Darby Buick was demolished on U.S. 41 in Sarasota and a lot of new construction is taking place. Could it be a new car dealership? We wouldn't think so. We'll ask our FB friends and let you know.

The first of about 10 Round Abouts to be installed in Sarasota. This one was just completed at Five Points in Downtown Sarasota. Our first experience with this one was a man on a cell phone stopping mid way through the circle....grrrrrr.

Yvette Robison, named OurTown Sarasota Person of the Week. She was named manager of the North Sarasota Library in June, and has spent a lot time making sure Newtown residents know how valuable the library  is.

By the end of July, 53 children had participated in a summer literacy program for elementary and middle school students that promotes reading, writing and speaking skills enhanced by music and dance. Robison and the North Sarasota Library staff are planning more activities to engage youth and young adults in academic opportunities and to remind adults in the community about numerous programs and services the library offers.

“The library is one of the greatest resources we have because it has an open door policy coupled with the desire of staff to assist anyone who comes through our doors,” Robison said.
Around 30 readers told us how they felt. You can also.

The new Sarasota County tax collector is going after Marina Jack's for over one million in taxes. The City leases the land Marina Jack's in return for 3% of the revenue. Two local companies were spamming people with email, Hoveround who makes those mobility carts and Macy's Pest Control. It wouldn't be bad if they took you off the list when you requested but, they didn't.   Editors Note: Ironically we haven't gotten their spam since we posted this commentary:)

Who was the winner of the worst company in America as voted on by readers of The Consumerist for 2010, Comcast. The Consumerist is published by Consumers Report ie Consumers Union. Obviously, Comcast irked enough readers to capture the title over other nominees including Bank of America and Ticket Master. The prominent objects of discontent seemed to be Comcast's pricing and service. Thank goodness we have a choice of TV cable companies in the Sarasota area. We lobbied for such back in 2005.

* Sarasota County Schools third-graders performance slips on the 2010 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test results released Thursday,  the percentage who scored at or above proficiency level slipped two percentage points in both reading and mathematics compared to 2009.

Of the 67 Florida school districts, Sarasota County ranked fifth in the percentage of students who scored at the proficiency level in reading and sixth in the percentage of students proficient in mathematics. Voters just renewed a 1% sales tax to keep our schools ahead of the pack. Go figure.

* Sarasota County moves $3.6 million from housing fund to their Economic Developing Corp. to help bring jobs to the area. Seems like $3.6 mill would fund a lot of jobs.

In their heyday dry marina storage was rare and hard to find. Now racks go empty with a slow economy and high gas prices. Many marinas went to boat condominiums.  Hidden Harbor Marina has been closed for four years and is in the process of a remodel.

Sarasota Square Mall has been fighting low attendance for decades. It's in a prime area of town, what gives. Well for now it's a slow economy with high end stores located at SouthGate Mall instead of SSM. A big boost to the mall could be the planned Costco which may be locating in the old Dillards area there. Tell us how you feel about Sarasota Square Mall at  our  page.

Venice spends $700,000 to downgrade the airport and keep jets out. It's a terrible place for an airport with so much residential around it. Why don't they spend their money more wisely and sell the airport and relocate to a place that will accommodate jets. This area has more private plane traffic then commercial jets. Venice is fighting the FAA and is bound to loose tons of taxpayer dollars on the battle itself. Photo: FDEM

The OurTown Sarasota Woman of the Month for December 2010 is Valerie. We chose her because she routinely on her own cleans a Sarasota County bayou without being asked to. Removing plastic bottles, paper, whatever it takes to make our environment a better place Valerie helps to make it happen. Bravo Valerie!

Little duckys revel in the brisk Tuesday morning air as temps sunk to 28 in the Sarasota area. Yes, that is frost on the grass. Warmer weather is due in a few days. And should jump to the mid 70's.

Our Town Sarasota addressed air quality with Sarasota County over 5 years ago. They blew us off and said, oh we have great air by Federal standards. Now the Feds may make Sarasota have auto inspections to lower air pollutants. FPL's power plant in Ruskin doesn't help our air either.

Sign of the times, a landlord or bank puts the tenants goods on the front lawn?

Sarasota County kicks in $300,000 to help run Longboat Key Trolley in 2011. Manatee County kicks in $200,000 leaving the trolley about $100,000 short. It costs around $16 per passenger trip. So round trip would be like $32?

We found these culprits feeding birds and causing a nuisance at Siesta Key Beach. Under the OurTown Sarasota ordinances they will be fined $100 per bird that they feed at the beach. That should pay for our trip to New Zealand, thank you:)

The state will also help subsidize the company depending on how many jobs they create. Sanborn Studios says they will invest $30 million in the company in the next few years.

If people didn't feed these seagulls then the birds would out in the ocean fishing. It's usually people who haven't grown up on the water that don't know it's bad to feed wildlife and annoying to others who visit the beach.

A strip mall on S. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota was bulldozed but remains dormant. Funding or a slow economy we guess has halted the work so far.

There was a hotel scheduled for U.S. 41 and Stickney Road. The slow economy side railed  that project for a bit. That's a bad location for a high traffic operation.

* Pestiside used in Sarasota is questioned in California.....

"The study found that groundwater near fumigated fields in Sarasota County, one of two Florida sites tested, contained iodide concentrations between 6 and 1,500 times those typically found in fresh water and between 2 and 2 1/2 those found in sea water.

High levels of iodide, a component of broken down methyl iodide, can cause thyroid disease and could contribute to miscarriages, fetal death and developmental disabilities, said Susan E. Kegley, a scientist with the Pesticide Action Network. " Read more http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_16066499

You may have read where a Myakka company got an $8 million dollar Federal grant to put in high speed fiber optic Internet in the Myakka area. We contacted the company that got the grant and they said they would reach about 1700 homes at best. That comes to about $5000 per home. One of the justifications is that students need high speed broadband, true, but also figure that probably about 30% of the households don't have children now the cost goes up to $6722 per home. What do you think? We have had over 30 readers responses to this

This is the site where the old Steak and Ale used to sit on S. Tamiami Trail in front of Best Buy in Sarasota. What new restaurant would you like to see there?

There was no shortage of people at Siesta Key Beach late Sunday. Colleges may be finished for the year but high schools and the like are still in session. The drummers once unique on Sunday evening were there pushing out their obnoxious monotonous beat for over two hours. Maybe it's time to rethink that group at Siesta Key?

Who laid these eggs? We wont' tell. But, we can say the architecture downtown Sarasota took a nice turn in many ways with restoring older buildings over the years. However, those who chose stark squares for buildings or Lloyd Wright type structures didn't get our vote.

A yearly tally of state prison populations shows that, nationwide, numbers are lower than the previous year for the first time since 1972 - but not in Florida.

But, with an increase of 1,500 prisoners, Florida was second only to Pennsylvania in the increased number of people behind bars. More than 100,000 inmates are serving time in Florida's prisons, and studies show more than a quarter of those released each year are back behind bars within three years. The study recommends investing more money in rehabilitation to reverse that trend. Photo of Arcadia prison during family visits.
