Our pictorial review of the
famous Grove Park Inn started in October of 2011. As we toured this
magnificent resort we posted pictures to our Facebook page. Our
readers rang out in the dozens, 'been there done that, we're
headed back soon". We rapidly found out why:) The old world charm
of this resort is captivating and the views are breathtaking. The
staff is full of southern charm and hospitality.

The classically stately Grove Park Inn built from granite boulders hewn
from Sunset Mountain, The Grove Park Inn opened in 1913. At its opening dinner,
William Jennings Bryan declared that it had been “built for the ages."

During the summers of 1935
and ’36, author F. Scott Fitzgerald resided in our Room 441. He’s just one of
the American luminaries to have stayed here, a list that includes Harry Houdini,
Will Rogers, George Gershwin, Thomas Edison, Eleanor Roosevelt and Henry Ford.
Not to mention presidents — William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Calvin
Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The Spa is more than 43,000 square feet in size, 20,000 of which are amenities
for you to enjoy before and after your treatment.
The Spa is ranked #13
Worldwide by Travel & Leisure "World's Best Hotel Spas" 2008.

Julie Powell from the Grove Park Inn illustrates just how large one of
their two main fireplaces in the lobby really are. Some say you could fit a
small car in the fireplace:) Thank you Julie for the tour!

A super comfy room with king size bed, flat screen TV, fridge and coffee
maker. The real deal are the views and ambience. Next time we hope to stay in
the original resort.

The elevator for the main Inn is built into large rock formations. You
couldn't have met a happier "Director of Vertical climbs", Ms. Peggy
Wilson to take you upon your rounds on the elevator. This woman will make
anybody's day brighter.

The hotel was the vision of E.W. Grove, a St. Louis entrepreneur who made his
millions in the 1890s peddling an elixir called Grove’s Tasteless Chill Tonic.
For his Inn, he envisioned a hotel that would be like “a big home where every
modern convenience could be found, but with all the old-fashioned qualities of
genuineness with no sham.”

The golf course first opened for play in 1899 and was redesigned in 1924
by the great Donald Ross. The passing decades gradually altered its play,
and in 2001, the resort undertook an ambitious $2.5 million program to
restore the course to the past glory and spirit of its original Donald
Ross design. This is a shot-maker’s course, emphasizing accuracy over
power in its 6,720 yard, par 70 layout.

reds silhouetted by the mountains.

The Blue Ridge Pkwy from our SE Tour. The leaves had just begun to change
last week. We did Atlanta, Asheville, BR Pkwy, Nashville, Chattanooga
then back home Sarasota which had cooled down since left a week ago.

An OurTown Sarasota reader sent us this photo of the Blue Ridge Mountains
a week after we were there, illustrating how gorgeous the peak of the
season really is. Thank you.
Elaine's night club in the Inn has entertainment and dueling pianos. It is
named after Mr. Groves wife. The photo was taken from a glass elevator.
